Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a 2016 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Doctor Strange. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the fourteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the sequel to Doctor Strange (2016). The film is directed by Scott Derrickson, who wrote the screenplay with C. Robert Cargill and Jon Spaihts. Benedict Cumberbatch reprises his role as Stephen Strange, the protagonist of the previous film. In the film, Strange must defend the world against the dangers of a multiverse and tries to heal after the events of the first film. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch (born 19 July 1976) is an English actor and film producer who has performed in film, television, theatre and radio. He is best known for his roles as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock (2010–present), William Pitt in the HBO series Parade's End (2012), Stephen Hawking in the television film Hawking (2004), Major Stewart Granger in The Imitation Game (2014), and the voice of Smaug in the film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013). He also portrayed the title character in the 2009 adaptation of Frankenstein and played WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in the 2014 biographical drama The Fifth Estate, also in 2014. He has been nominated for an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe Award and three Screen Actors Guild Awards.
